CLUJ POTTERY – CULTURAL HERITAGE OF A POTTERS’ GUILD
Exhibition of the Transylvanian Museum of Ethnography
August, 19 – September, 17 – 2016
The Transylvanian Museum of Ethnography, cultural public institution under the authority of the Cluj County Council, invites you on Friday, August 19, 2016 at 1 p.m. at the opening of the exhibition Cluj Pottery. Cultural heritage of a potters’ guild.
Corporations of medieval origin, the guilds were founded with the aim to protect the members’ interests, the production secret and to ensure a higher level of products’ quality. The rights and obligations of the guild’s members were established by its regulations, which in time could be renewed and completed. This was also the case of the regulations of the potters’ guild in Cluj, the oldest renewal of that dating in 1512. The document was completed later in 1523 and 1770. In 1815 there was made a new regulation, the last document of this type for the guild, the last one transforming as a result of a law in 1872 in industrial association, and in 1924 in Sindicate.
The exhibition put up for presenting some aspects of the cultural heritage of this group of craftsmen by using some goods that belonged to the guild: various documents, guild chest of the National Archives’ heritage (Cluj County Department) and artefacts of the Transylvanian Museum of Ethnography’s collections – tiles, usual and decorative recipients made by the Cluj craftsmen in the 18th – 20th centuries.
The exhibition is made in partnership with the Cluj County Department of the National Archives, with the support of Cluj County Library Octavian Goga and the National Museum of Transylvanian History.
The exhibition will be opened till September 17, 2016, from Wednesday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the main building of the Transylvanian Museum of Ethnography (Memorandum Street no. 21).
