The tactile exhibition, ‘Touch and Understand: The Tactile Message of Traditional Peasant Objects’, was created in 2009 with the support of the National Cultural Fund Administration, as part of the ‘Equal Opportunities in Access to Culture’ project.

The exhibition is primarily intended for visitors with visual impairments, but it also offers a unique experience for regular visitors, particularly children, who are eager to touch and handle such unusual objects.

It seemed natural to us that the exhibition should fit in thematically with our current main exhibition, presenting the same important areas of traditional culture, but through a different perspective.

Depending on the available space, representative areas of the permanent exhibition were selected for tactile interpretation. These areas cover gathering from nature, traditional fishing, agriculture, animal husbandry, blacksmithing, pottery, furriery, the domestic textile industry and traditional clothing.

Within each domain, we have selected exhibits that are safe to touch and which together outline the peasant universe as an organic whole, close to nature. The replicas of patrimony objects were made using traditional techniques by folk craftsmen from various regions of Transylvania.

The exhibition is equipped with tactile strips to mark points of interest such as the entrance/exit, stopping points on modules, the information kiosk and access to utilities. These strips help visitors to find their way around the exhibition space.

Informative texts are provided in both written (Braille and conventional print) and audio formats. Relief drawings also help people to access information.

The creation of two-play areas at the beginning and end of the tactile exhibition allows all children to experience traditional toys first-hand.
