The Transylvanian Museum of Ethnography, a public cultural institution that functions under the authority of the Cluj County Council, invites you on Thursday, January 18, 2024, at 5:00 p.m., in the presence of His Holiness Benedict Bistrițeanul, vicar bishop of the Archdiocese of Vad, Feleac and Cluj, to the book launch of the “The iconographic program of the Maramureș wooden churches: historical document and theological discourse”, Mega publishing house, Cluj-Napoca, 2023, signed by Dr. Dumitrița Daniela Filip, National Museum of the Alba Iulia Union.
The book was published through the competition-program for the publication of the doctoral theses started by the Mega Publishing House in Cluj-Napoca, and it stands out for the novelty of approaching the painting from the Maramureș churches of the 18th and early 19th centuries from a historical and theological perspective. “Analyzed by taking into account the historical context and the spirituality of the Church, the scenes painted in the Maramureș churches make up an iconographic program that abounds in theological ideas and visually supports what the hymnography tells the ear, the hearing.” The proposal to understand and interpret the iconographic discourse brought by the author to meet the readers opens new horizons for an interdisciplinary research, which highlights, on the one hand, the correspondence between the historical, political, social, confessional context and the painted themes, and on the other, the correspondence between iconography, architecture and the symbolism of the sacred space. The identification of the sources from which the Maramureș painters were inspired in sketching the iconographic program is another element of novelty that the present research brings. Following a comparative analysis of the content of the iconographic program and the hymnography from the religious books, the author comes to the conclusion that the theology of the Maramureș iconographic ensemble is similar to the theology of the Triodion, with some thematic insertions from the Pentecostarion and the Octoechos.
