100 years – 100 de artefacts

The negative on glass was made by professor Romulus Vuia in 1923, in Veredin, Luncavița, Caraș-Severin county, Mountain Banat.

In the foreground, there is a woman, dressed up in ordinary work clothes: dark scarf; home-woven cloth shirt with wide sleeves, wrinkled over the elbow and finished with large wrinkled welts which have a geometrical decoration at the bottom; white laps, made from home-woven cloth, having two side gussets each, with a dark floral-geometric decoration at the bottom; simple clogged breastplate, with dark side pocket; at the back, over the white laps, there is a fragment of dark garment; wide, woven belt, vertically arranged in polychrome rods.

The woman carries a child on her back, who sits in a cradle attached to her shoulders with black and white braided straps. The cradle is covered with a thick cloth, probably made of wool, finished with knotted tassels. Under her left arm, the woman carries a fork, an indispensable tool for women, made of wood, with a wool distaff tied at the end, from which she spins the thread with the help of a wooden spindle, while she walks. The woman was caught walking on an alley, in the background being distinguished houses of rectangular shape, disposed in parallel, built perpendicularly to the road, and following a certain alignment.

The white-painted houses have a closed courtyard, with large wooden gates, gabled roofs covered with tiles, and the house entrance is made from the street, through a vaulted porch. On the house’s pediment, there can be noticed the attic’s and basement’s ventilation windows, framed with plaster reliefs, as well as the windows with wooden shutters.

The negative with inventory no. 71, registered by title “Wife carrying the child on her back”, is made on glass support, in the dry gelatin technique, with dimensions of 9 cm x 12 cm.
